Responsibilities as Contract Reporter/Photographer at the paper

• Writing on topics of my own choosing with a solid emphasis on community news, and recently, in addition, the arts-entertainment beat
• Photography using my own 35 mm equipment. I then scanned and retouched the pictures digitally, using Adobe Photoshop, before sending them by email
• Writing and photography as assigned by the editor
• An average combined total of 50-60 of my stories and pictures are published every month in this twice weekly paper with a circulation of more than 25,000

Responsibilities and accomplishments as Editor at the paper

• Full responsibility for make-up of the newspaper using QuarkXpress on a Macintosh computer (ads were inserted in Duncan at Citizen)
• Makeup of all supplements
• Makeup of advertising for special promotions such as Lake Days and Firemen’s Supplement
• Responsible for writing all the news and taking all the photographs for the paper during that period. (There were no other reporters or contributors)
• Did all the work on the pictures with Adobe Photoshop
• Responsible for establishing contacts with the community
• Responsible for meeting all deadlines (never missed one)
• Familiar with how to use Fetch and other FTP programs for file transfer
• Prepared pages as self extracting archive files using Stuffit 
• Worked closely with staff at Citizen, establishing good relationship

Responsibilities and accomplishments as Reporter at the paper

• Wrote copy on whatever subject was assigned to me by the editor
• Reported on every aspect of life in the Cowichan Lake district, an area that included five small communities
• Photographed events, both assigned and freelance
• Wrote my own weekly humour column
• Contributed regularly to the editorial page
• Set type regularly on a Compugraphic Junior and a Headliner
• Laid out and pasted up  advertising and pages

ADDITIONAL USEFUL EXPERIENCE

• Taught web page design and Microsoft Front Page for the community education division of Malaspina University-College in Duncan, BC since 1998
• Tutored individuals in web page design techniques
• Designed and maintained web sites for various clients
